Moment with the father

The historic stone house I live in backs right up to the Rails to Trails. It has been my habit for years to take a walk there with Jesus. On an overcast day, I headed out the door for my regularly scheduled walk 'n talk with my Lord.

We recently had a couple of inches of snow, followed by sleet and freezing rain. I cautiously began to walk, pondering the difficulties of a current situation, wondering out loud what I could do, what direction to take and worrying what the outcome would be.

The gravel path was snow covered, topped with a hard layer of ice. As I was navigating the trail, struggling to find my footing, fearful I would slip and fall, I was ready to turn back and just give up. It was then that I noticed a set of footprints to the side, already broken through the hard crust. I moved over a bit and walked right in them. One foot after another. Footprints that were exactly my size and exactly my stride. I was walking in the steps that were already there. I traveled on, no longer fearful of falling.

I heard the Voice of my Lord say, "Marti, I am going before you. I have set the steps for you to follow. They are perfectly designed to fit you. The worry and the wondering are not for you to do. If you will just follow after Me, in My footsteps, you will not fall."

It was a gentle, clear reminder that it is He who plans my course and it is for me to follow after Him.

"I know, O Lord, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps."
