God's Thoughts, Your Plans

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
James 1:5

We have become professional decision makers: entrepreneurs, mothers, ministry leaders. We calculate risks all the time. Devise our strategies. Execute. Find a way. Find a contact. We are like water pouring downhill—moving around barriers. Anything to keep the plan rolling full speed ahead.

I wonder if it is to us that wisdom is shouting in Proverbs 1:20, “she raises her voice in the public square; at the head of the noisy streets...How long will you simple ones love your simple ways?” We’ve become so consumed with our noble noise we’re uneducated in God’s counsel. We’ve done market research. We’ve looked at social trends. But we’ve forgotten to ask God for his wisdom. Don’t become so busy with your business that you forget God has his own ideas about it.

In chapter one wisdom is calling out to us. In chapter two it is we who must call out for wisdom. “If you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding...the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:3,6).

Consider this a gentle reminder to commit your ways to the Lord. Get your plans from Him. The builder who builds his house without Yahweh labors in vain. Don’t run ahead of his leadership. Don’t be such a leader you forget to be his follower. Don’t run so fast you aren’t taking time to wait on God.

God has a mind and a strategy for your community, your family, the perplexing situation you are in, and the opportunity standing right in front of you. God is the finish line and the strategic path to get there. So learn to hear the shepherd’s voice. At the intersection of industry and frivolity he is calling out.
