God dwells in a tent

I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar.”
1 Chronicles 17:5

God is a nomad. A drifter. A wandering Spirit who blows in the wind. He will not be tethered to our ramrod straight services or our triangular org-charts. He will not be domesticated by our market management. And just because He chooses one way one day doesn’t mean He’ll choose the same way the next. Will you still follow Him?

Many people build a cathedral where God has been. We enshrine what He has done and systematize how He has done it. We ossify in our methods. Our solutions become mortared to culture or personality. But God asked for a tent not a cathedral. When God moves, the tent must move. After all, an empty tent is a useless thing. Will you chase after Him?

It can be a fearful thing to follow a fearless God. He will pin you between an Egyptian army and a Red Sea just to show Himself off. Will you trust Him?

He is taking you somewhere you’ve never been before. You don’t know the way, or when you’ll arrive. There’s a new level of His glory to explore--incite into His imagination. He wants you to meet Him there and stand in awe, to see Him in His splendor. You are His witness. He wants you to watch Him in many places so you can speak of Him in any place. Will you testify about Him?

The tent is as unassuming and mobile as it’s master. He wants His people to be set free from the baggage of ambition; unencumbered by the weight of wealth; unfettered by the burden of public opinions; not bloated with the infatuation with knowledge and control; nimble and quick to forsake all other distractions; a people leaning on the arm of their beloved, coming up from the desert. Will you love Him?

Don’t stall. Don’t look back. He is drawing you out of Egypt, out of Sodom and Gomorrah. His rescue is urgent. This world will not stand in the judgment. The highway is no place to lay your head. God is calling you to make your home in Him, remain in Him. He is your caravan-on-the-move. Will you abide in Him?

Stay humble! Stay hungry! Keep growing! Keep bending--letting go of all else you once thought was worthy. It’s holding you back. Cling to Him only. When His glory lifts from the tent, lunge out into the unknown after Him. An empty tent is a useless thing.
